Jean - my volunteer story

04 February 2020

Our volunteers are the life blood of Home-Start and we couldn’t do what we do without them.

As this is ‘National Storytelling’ week we thought we’d share one of our volunteer’s story:

With a 30 year career in elderly care Jean is no stranger to working with people and sharing the highs and lows of life. Jean has volunteered in some capacity all of her life, you could say it’s in her genes!

For 4 years Jean has volunteered with Home-Start Aberdeen, both in the charity shop and as a home-visiting volunteer.

“I started volunteering in the Home-Start shop initially which I found to be lots of fun. It was one of my friends who suggested I should consider working with the families as a home-visiting volunteer. I wasn’t really sure to start with but I went along to the training, and I just loved it!

I’ve supported a number of families now, all who have faced different challenges ranging from families living with mental health, families impacted and living with cancer and families with no recourse to public funds who need support.

It’s a privilege to be able help these families, even in a small way and it’s brought me so much joy, and sadness, but much more joy. I’ve built strong connections with the families, especially the little ones who often refer to me as “Grandma Jean”.

I’ve been able to provide a safe space and listening ear at times of real need for families and be there as a regular contact, someone to trust and help during difficult times.

The little ones are so much fun and I share my love of baking and cooking with them.

It can take time to build trust with parents but over time we do.

The ongoing support I’ve had from the staff team, as a volunteer, has been tremendous. They do such a great job and are always there to provide me with expert guidance and support.

“I’m so glad I found Home-Start as a volunteering opportunity – I don’t know what else I would be doing.”
