Could you become part of Home-Start Aberdeen's friendly team? Our volunteers are at the heart of what we do - and we always welcome new faces.

Home-Start Aberdeen volunteer training

Without our volunteers, Home-Start Aberdeen simply would not exist. Our team of 125 volunteers fulfil a number of roles, as follows:

- Home visiting
- Recipe for Life
- Charity shop assistant
- Charity shop collections/delivery driver
- Trustee/adviser
- Events support via the Friends of Home-Start Aberdeen.

More information on each of these roles is provided in our volunteering information pack, which is a comprehensive guide to our volunteering opportunities.

The majority of our volunteers assist with home visiting, so additional information on this role is included below.

Home visiting volunteers

Our home visiting volunteers:

  • Offer support to a local family in their own home for 2-3 hours per week
  • Receive training and ongoing support
  • Help others develop their parenting skills
  • Encourage families to engage with their communities
  • Provide practical guidance on budgeting and household management
  • Connect families with other relevant organisations and services.

Supporting Aberdeen families

All of our home visiting volunteers are carefully matched with a Home-Start family to ensure that the relationship is as productive as possible for everyone. Regular training is provided and all volunteers have a co-ordinator who provides ongoing support and meets with them regularly.

Why volunteer?

People choose to volunteer with Home-Start Aberdeen to:

  • Make a difference to a family’s life
  • Give something back to their local community
  • Return the support they once received from Home-Start
  • Share a similar experience
  • Boost their confidence
  • Prepare for returning to work or to progress their career
  • Do something fulfilling with their spare time.

You can learn about the experiences of some of Home-Start Aberdeen’s volunteers here .

Making a difference

Data gathered by Home-Start UK last year indicated that more than 90% of the families supported by Home-Start volunteers said they felt:

  • More involved in their children’s development
  • That their children’s emotional and physical health and wellbeing had improved
  • Better able to manage their children’s behaviour
  • Less isolated
  • Less stressed
  • More able to cope with day-to-day running of the house
  • That they were using local services more.
